While working with the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia as its puppy-breeding manager in the early '80s, Wally Conron received a request from Hawaii. A vision-impaired woman there, whose husband was allergic to dog hair had written to the Centre in the hopes that they might have an allergy-free guide dog. At first he tried working with and training Standard Poodles, but found them mostly unsuitable for the task. That's when he decided to cross a Labrador Retriever with a Standard Poodle. One puppy named Sultan, from the first litter, was found to be allergy-free. Once Sultan successfully passed all of his training, he went to live in Hawaii.
Some of the first litters did not produce consistent results, in terms of the non-shedding, allergy-free factors. So, two research facilities, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor, were started in Australia to further develop the Australian Labradoodle breed, to produce consistency within the breed. During this time, several other purebred dogs were infused. Australian Labradoodles were first introduced into Canada in 2000. Australian Labradoodles combine the best of the two base breeds that went into their development.
